Scraper is a film about a moment in our platform-mediated discourse and its role as a socio-technical scaffold for collapse. What happens we begin to think, act, read, speak, commune like a scraper? There are many people who like to pontificate on and celebrate being ‘terminally online’ yet they tend to overlook the ‘terminal’ part. And Scraper intends to resolve this.

Each kaleidoscopic chapter is an interface for a folkless lore of Minimally Viable Knowledge: stories of procedural data extraction, and aggregation as a cultural logic. Together they explore a ‘connectionist mentality’; an implicit ideological code or intellectual spirit emerging across our platform feeds. Scraper's acid-pessimism traces a scorched history of excommunication, encryption, and ecstatic extraction; an ‘entropology’ of memetic redundancy, ecstatic resignation, and model collapse.

Web crawlers, or scrapers, systematically search, index, and aggregate manifold data from across the internet, creating user-profiles and datasets that contribute to training and implementing machine learning models whose outputs consist of statistical extrapolations that resonate or ‘track’ with median semantic clusters. These generated artefacts are predefined by what is already searchable or a known category. Scraper explores our own functional and evolutionary internalisation of this process: How much of our gestures, terminologies, concepts, rituals, philosophies, visual and material cultures may be elaborated beyond the capacities of algorithmic recognition?

A known conspiracy narrative that nonetheless provides pause for thought about online life is the ‘dead internet theory’ - that most of the internet;s traffic is composed of bots and auto-generated content. Scraper consider how this impacts our own cultural outputs, our lexicons of language, concepts, mental models, and images... Drawing from recent research in Machine Learning such as the concept known as ‘model collapse’, Scraper traces a “minimum viable knowledge” based on the dredging and re-dredging of content for moodboards, think-pieces and datasets that prompt further dredging of the same depleted slough. Instead of an enriching folklore produced and shared among cultures to imaginatively explore the frontiers of their world, this presentation looks at how a platform-mediated “folkless lore” and practices of “ritualized prediction” emerges: “enraptured datapoints of cultivated anomaly,” found among the so-called ‘digital dark forests’ of Discord servers and group chats, harvested for algorithmically-viable insights, and taking the place of any functionally subversive, outlier subculture.

So what of the cultures and their algomaxxing artfefacts that embody this entropic course? Are all the -cores, promptist screeds, and aphorisms that desperately attempt to define the contours of our combined and uneven Multi-User Shared Hallucinations nothing more than grist to a “degenerative adversarial network?”
